Fashion?
Really?? Me???
I enjoy fashion – it is design, and I lOVE design. Project Runway is one of my favorite shows on
television. I love watching the creative
process and experts using their skills.
Project Runway covers both of them.
I could definitely do without the whining, drama and some of the
personalities – but you take the good with the ugly (literally).
I’m not a big reader of fashion magazines. I don’t spend hours on Polyvore creating
perfect dream outfits. I don’t have time
to wander the department stores of fight the chaos of TJ Maxx, nor do I want it. Well, I would like the time, but not for
that.
I spent many Saturday afternoons in the 80’s and 90’s watching
Style with Elsa Klensch on CNN covering the runway shows. This is when I developed a deep love for
Escada! (Did I just seriously date myself?)

The truth is I’m not very fashionable. I never have been. I’ve always felt like I missed my time. In my 20’s I was trying to be taken seriously
in teaching positions and not mistaken for a student. I was already married and the club scene
wouldn’t have been my thing anyway. I
thought my 30’s would be my time to shine.
Design school helped, but it never really clicked.
Here I am a third of the way through my 40’s and I’m too
busy chasing a preschooler around to give much else thought. Thankfully I now have resources available to
give me a kick in the skinny jeans.
Blogs abound to help us pare down, pull it together, and
walk out the door not worried about making it on the People of WalMart website.
(Have you seen this? Talk about losing
hours of your life while laughing hysterically)
The No-Brainer Wardrobe is a great little e-book by
Hayley of the Tiny Twig.
Identifying my personal style, requirements and how to make it work is
key to not wasting time, money and energy over getting dressed. Trina Holden
has also just released her new book, Embracing Beauty, that I am eager to get
my hands on.
Sephora is another personal favorite. Having all the brands, products, and colors
in one place makes this my happy place.
The gals there are normally more than willing to help you find exactly
what you didn’t know you were looking for to shine and put your best face
forward.

Showing off our cute tops from Stitch Fix |
Lastly, my latest FIXation – Stitch Fix! You can read more about that here and sign up yourself. It is so nice to
have someone else go through the millions of options available and send me 5
hand selected items. So, the bottom line
is that I depend on serious help to even approach being fashionable or
stylish.
Charm is deceptive and beauty
is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised.
Proverbs 31:30
Consider the lilies, how they
grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory
was not arrayed like one of these.
Luke 12:27
What about you?
What are your favorite resources?
Enjoyed reading your post today. I haven't had much time to invest in fashion either since I homeschool both my daughters (ages 10 and 12 years old). Yet, I know it's time it to define my style and find some clothes that reflect it, especially as I get older. (Visiting from the A-Z Challenge.)
ReplyDeleteSo glad you came by. You should definitely check out Stitch Fix and those two books. What a great example you will be for your beautiful daughters taking care of yourself. Blessings!!
DeleteHi Amy! Oh we have so much in common..in spending under 10 minutes on your blog I find that you are a fellow spiritmama - love you already for that- then too, the fashion thing. My husband is a designer and I have worked closely with him for years- even launching a small girls' dress line. so yes we should connect...will follow your blog and ofcourse you - on Twitter.. blessed weekend to you lady!
ReplyDeleteWow!! I'm intrigued, and I'd love to see the dress line. Looking forward to getting to know you better as well!
DeleteSo funny that I put on a pair of shoes this morning that always remind me of you!!! They are green and purple and I purchased them after seeing some of your shoes. :)
ReplyDeleteI think that finding your own personal style is so important. I will never be a fashionista, but I have learned to appreciate what others consider to be beautiful. It makes me want to work harder at it myself!
I have got to see those shoes!! Pretty sure no one will ever call me a fashionista, either, but it is fun.
DeleteOh now, shopping and fashion, I love. Nothing makes me happier than the clearance racks at the mall or my favorite thrift store, thumbing through the clothes to find the thing that someone missed that I would love. :) And fortunately, my youngest has a REALLY good eye... Even when she was 6, she would tell me to put things back... and when I ignored her (because she was SIX and what did SHE know??) and bought the thing anyway, darn it all, she was always right. Now I shop and before I buy, I always ask "Would Alicia let me wear this?" lol
ReplyDeleteCan I borrow Alicia sometime?? I'm so unskilled that a thrift store is like an advanced calculus class to me - too overwhelming. Clearance is one of my happy words!
