F is for Fashion

Fashion?  Really??  Me???

I enjoy fashion – it is design, and I lOVE design.  Project Runway is one of my favorite shows on television.  I love watching the creative process and experts using their skills.  Project Runway covers both of them.  I could definitely do without the whining, drama and some of the personalities – but you take the good with the ugly (literally).

I’m not a big reader of fashion magazines.  I don’t spend hours on Polyvore creating perfect dream outfits.  I don’t have time to wander the department stores of fight the chaos of TJ Maxx, nor do I want it.  Well, I would like the time, but not for that. 

I spent many Saturday afternoons in the 80’s and 90’s watching Style with Elsa Klensch on CNN covering the runway shows.  This is when I developed a deep love for Escada! (Did I just seriously date myself?)  http://www.elsaklensch.com/Changing.htm

The truth is I’m not very fashionable.  I never have been.  I’ve always felt like I missed my time.  In my 20’s I was trying to be taken seriously in teaching positions and not mistaken for a student.  I was already married and the club scene wouldn’t have been my thing anyway.  I thought my 30’s would be my time to shine.  Design school helped, but it never really clicked.

Here I am a third of the way through my 40’s and I’m too busy chasing a preschooler around to give much else thought.  Thankfully I now have resources available to give me a kick in the skinny jeans.

Blogs abound to help us pare down, pull it together, and walk out the door not worried about making it on the People of WalMart website. (Have you seen this?  Talk about losing hours of your life while laughing hysterically) 

The No-Brainer Wardrobe is a great little e-book by Hayley of the Tiny Twig.  Identifying my personal style, requirements and how to make it work is key to not wasting time, money and energy over getting dressed. Trina Holden has also just released her new book, Embracing Beauty, that I am eager to get my hands on.

Sephora is another personal favorite.  Having all the brands, products, and colors in one place makes this my happy place.  The gals there are normally more than willing to help you find exactly what you didn’t know you were looking for to shine and put your best face forward.

Lastly, my latest FIXation – Stitch Fix!  You can read more about that here and sign up yourself.  It is so nice to have someone else go through the millions of options available and send me 5 hand selected items.  So, the bottom line is that I depend on serious help to even approach being fashionable or stylish.
